This bread is great with a bowl of soup, for sandwiches, for anything…it’s bread! If you haven’t had homemade bread before, you are missing out. It takes some time to make, but we think the more effort you put into a recipe and the longer something takes to make, the better it tastes.
1/4 cup warm water
1 package active dry yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cup rolled oats
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon shortening
3-3 1/4 cups flour
In a small bowl, proof the yeast by sprinkling it into 1/4 cup warm water. Let stand for 3-5 minutes until yeast dissolves. In a saucepan, combine 1 1/2 cups warm water and salt and bring to a boil. Stir in the rolled oats, brown sugar, and shortening. Cool to lukewarm. Stir in the yeast mixture. Mix in flour, adding until the dough isn’t sticky. Knead on a floured board or surface for 5-10 minutes. Transfer to a greased bowl and cover with a dish towel and place in a draft-free area for 1 1/2 hours. After the bread has risen, punch down the dough on a floured surface to remove air bubbles. Turn the dough into a greased 9×5x3″ loaf pan. Cover with a dish towel and allow to rise for another hour. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 40-45 minutes.
